{Cap and Diploma}Photo Gallery Michigan State PoliceSgt. James Campbell of the Michigan State Police visited my Introduction to Health and Wellness classes in May. He presented a powerpoint presentation on the drinking and driving laws in Michigan focusing on the teenage driver. In addition he covered examples in pictures of the tragic consequences of making the choice to get behind the wheel after drinking. After the slide show, Sgt. Campbell took my classes outside to experience driving the GEM car (Global Electric Motors) with the Fatal Vision goggles that simulate intoxication. The GEM car is part of the EPIC II program (Education Prevention of Impaired Crashes) presented by the Michigan State Police. {Sgt. Campbell} Sgt. Campbell explains what type of roadside tests
the police will conduct with a suspected drunk driver. {Roadside test} This young driver is being tested with the finger to nose test. Notice the goggles are not on yet. {Click it!} Safety first. This student prepares to drive the GEM car through the course. {Cone maze} Down and back. The trick is to avoid all of the cones. {Bracelets} This driver wasn't able to avoid the cones. As a result, she gets arrested on the roadside and taken downtown. AAA of MichiganApril Morrison-Harke of AAA in Michigan visited with my Introduction to Health and Wellness students in May for two days. She talked about the hazards of distracted driving as well as the dangers of drinking and driving. The students were able to participate in an interactive driving simulator that featured different types of driving scenarios. It was an informative and fun hands-on activity. {April Morrison-Harke} April Morrison-Harke of AAA Michigan explains about the various ways drivers can be distracted while driving. {Simulator} This student gets some final instructions as she prepares to "hit the road" on the simulator. {The Simulator} The view for the driver is quite realistic. Their experience also includes traffic noises, weather conditions, and other possible distractions. {The Simulator} The student must react to directions, such as when to turn, given by an on board computer voice. The driver controls the car with gas and brake foot pedals as well as the steering wheel. {The Simulator} Concentration is the key to good driving. Distracted driving causes 80% of car accidents.
